GeriScan’s staff was pleased to see that one of the 10 recommendations from the White House Conference on Aging was to “support geriatric education and training for all healthcare professionals, paraprofessionals, health profession students, and direct care workers.”

We agree that should be done, and we’re taking that commitment a step further. Our goal is to support geriatric education in general. After all, geriatric needs affect everyone. Consider these statistics:

- An estimated 7.7 million Americans will be afflicted with Alzheimer's disease by 2030.

- One in 10 Americans older than 65 suffers from Alzheimer's disease. As the senior population grows, it is likely that Alzheimer's cases could triple by 2050 to more than 13 million patients.

- According to the Alzheimer's Association, the disease costs American businesses about $61 billion a year.

- According to the Long Distance Caregiver Project of the Alzheimer's Association of Los Angeles, 15 million days are missed from work each year because of long distance caregiving and the number of people doing this type of caregiving will double in the next 15 years.

As research continues, we’re learning more about how to decrease risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. We’re learning how to give caregivers the tools and support they need to care for loved ones without sacrificing their own physical and mental health. We’re learning more about how to age well and improve the quality of life in senior years.
