"The number of geriatricians remains low at 9,000 and is predicted to drop to 6,000 despite recent
efforts to increase physician training. Although the Alliance for Aging Research estimates that 36,000
geriatricians will be needed by 2030, many educational institutions, including schools of medicine,
nursing, pharmacy and dentistry, still do not require geriatric training."

-- The American Geriatrics Society, February, 2005

Some people say it takes a village to raise a child. Others, like GeriScan Founder Susan Scanland, know that it also takes a multi-disciplinary team to effectively deal with the geriatric patient. It is at this time in the patient's life that multiple, varied types and levels of expertise come into play to enhance the final years of life and make the patient's quality of life as enjoyable as possible.

Susan regularly presents on a variety of geriatric topics which demonstrate the need for collaborative care, shared goals, mutual understanding and informed decisions. Guiding the team of caregivers is in some way likened to conducting an orchestra: each player must read the same music, play their part well, and work in harmony.

Susan provides programs to social workers, geriatricians, medical directors, physical, occupational and recreational therapists at regional, state and national programs.
